A fantastic and substantial early modernist pendant necklace by American studio jeweler Keith Harryman, handcrafted in sterling silver and richly contrasted with natural picture jasper and rosewood.
The dramatic elongated pendant is composed as a sculptural geometric assemblage. A beautifully figured picture jasper panel crowns the design, displaying warm golden-brown tones and dark, landscape-like veining unique to the natural stone. Below it, open sterling elements frame a deeply grained rosewood panel and a row of dimensional wooden accents. Seven articulated sterling silver bars form a kinetic fringe, introducing subtle movement and reflected light as the necklace is worn.
This is believed to be among Harryman’s earliest pieces and beautifully demonstrates the emerging design language that would characterize his later work: bold geometry, architectural construction, mixed natural materials, and the interplay of polished silver with organic color and texture. Its considerable 45.1-gram weight gives the piece a satisfyingly substantial presence.
The pendant is signed “Harryman Sterling.” It is presented on a brand-new 18-inch 925 sterling silver neck wire fitted with a new sterling lobster clasp and jump rings. The clean, understated wire allows the impressive pendant to remain the focal point.
Keith Harryman is an American jewelry designer associated with the modernist studio-jewelry movement of the late 20th century. He studied jewelry design as a fine-arts student at the University of Kansas in Lawrence and began learning metalworking under the guidance of his father, Wesley Harryman. His limited-production designs are admired for their sculptural forms, geometric and architectural influences, contrasting surface treatments, and inventive combinations of sterling silver, gold, natural stones, and organic materials.
A distinctive and highly wearable example of American studio jewelry—equally compelling as a collectible work of wearable art or as a commanding statement necklace.
The sterling silver neck wire, lobster clasp, and jump rings are all brand new. As a vintage handcrafted piece incorporating natural stone and wood, minor variations and signs of age should be expected. The distinctive coloration, veining, and grain are inherent characteristics of the natural materials and contribute to the necklace’s one-of-a-kind appearance.
Keith Harryman
Keith Harryman is an American jewelry designer known for his modernist sterling silver work, most active during the late 20th century, particularly the 1970s through 1990s. He is associated with studio and artisan jewelry, producing pieces that emphasize sculptural form, texture, and geometric design. Harryman studied jewelry design as a fine arts student at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He began learning his craft under the guidance of his father, Wesley Harryman, which contributed to his strong foundation in metalworking and design. His work is characterized by bold, abstract forms and the use of materials such as sterling silver, gold, and natural stones including lapis, onyx, and opals. Many of his designs incorporate contrasting finishes—combining highly polished surfaces with textured elements—to create depth and visual interest. Design motifs in Harryman’s jewelry often reflect architectural and natural influences, with recurring geometric shapes such as triangles and angular forms that evoke movement and structure. His pieces include earrings, pins, bracelets, and necklaces, typically produced in limited quantities consistent with studio jewelry practices. Though not widely documented in mainstream design publications, Keith Harryman is recognized within the vintage and collector market as an artisan designer whose work reflects the modernist and studio jewelry movements of the late 20th century.
