An exceptional vintage Norwegian sterling silver necklace designed by Unn Tangerud for the UNI workshop of David-Andersen, featuring a dramatic sculptural pendant inspired by ancient Nordic and Viking-age design.

The large openwork pendant is constructed around a striking architectural framework of gently curved horizontal bars and geometric silver forms. Suspended throughout are multiple articulated drops composed of rectangular, oval, circular and diamond-shaped elements, creating wonderful movement and dimension when worn.

Deeply oxidized recessed details provide dramatic contrast against the raised sterling silver surfaces and emphasize the pendant's geometric construction.

At approximately 3 inches long and 2.75 inches wide, this is a substantial statement piece, yet its open construction gives it an airy sculptural quality rather than a heavy appearance.

About Unn Tangerud

Norwegian designer Unn Tangerud trained as a ceramicist at the Norwegian Arts and Crafts School in Oslo, graduating in 1956. Her jewelry later became known for its restrained yet primitive-modern character, frequently drawing inspiration from ancient Nordic culture and archaeological forms.

Tangerud designed for the UNI workshop associated with David-Andersen, and her work may be identified by UNI/D-A markings together with her initials or designer attribution. UNI jewelry was produced by several important Norwegian designers and represents a particularly collectible chapter of postwar Scandinavian jewelry design.
