Beautiful and expressive bronze figurative sculpture of a standing couple, attributed to renowned 20th-century Dutch sculptor Mari Andriessen, mounted on its original marble base.

This intimate composition depicts two elongated figures standing face to face in a quiet moment of connection. Rendered in a wonderfully modernist and impressionistic style, the sculpture reduces the human form to simplified vertical masses, softly modeled contours, and subtly abstracted features. The result is both sculptural and emotional—capturing the closeness of the pair without relying on excessive detail.

The surface has a rich brown bronze patina with beautifully varied texture and tonal depth, giving the figures a strong sense of movement, age, and artistic character. About the Artist — Mari Andriessen (1897–1979)
Mari Andriessen was one of the most important Dutch sculptors of the 20th century. Trained at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam under Jan Bronner, he became known for expressive figurative sculpture and major public monuments. His best-known works include Amsterdam’s De Dokwerker, a national symbol of Dutch resistance, as well as sculptures of Anne Frank and engineer Cornelis Lely. Andriessen’s work is admired for its ability to convey character and emotion through simplified, powerful human forms rather than excessive detail.
