Striking vintage Jaru California modernist figurative sculpture, dated 1986, featuring an abstract seated human form with a beautifully elongated silhouette, simplified facial structure, and heavily textured surface.

The figure is rendered in a distinctly modernist style, with one knee drawn upward, the opposite leg folded beneath, and the arms resting naturally across the body. The elongated neck, faceless profile, and sculptural asymmetry give the piece an almost brutalist-meets-figurative quality, while the contemplative pose adds a sense of quiet elegance.

What really makes this sculpture stand out is the surface treatment. The body is covered in a deeply textured, almost impasto-like finish that catches and reflects light beautifully. It has been refinished in a sophisticated light metallic silvery-gold tone, allowing the texture to become part of the sculpture’s visual movement rather than simply a surface detail.

The original base has been restored in a glossy black finish, creating a dramatic contrast against the metallic figure and giving the sculpture a much more polished, gallery-like presentation. The entire piece has been sealed with a durable clear lacquer, and new protective felt has been added underneath.

At 16.5 inches tall, this is large enough to function as a true statement piece without overwhelming a room. Its clean form works especially well in Mid-Century Modern, Postmodern, Brutalist, Hollywood Regency, contemporary, minimalist, and eclectic interiors.

About Jaru: 

Jaru Art Products was founded in Culver City, California, by Jack and Ruth Hirsh. The name “Jaru” was created from the first two letters of their names — Ja + Ru. The company became known for decorative art objects and figurative sculpture, producing both artist-designed pieces and its own lines throughout the second half of the 20th century.

Many Jaru pieces were identified only by paper labels, making examples with impressed or molded marks, like this one, particularly desirable for attribution.

Restoration: This sculpture is part of my ongoing restoration collection, created to preserve vintage decorative art and return deserving pieces to beautiful display condition. I have restored over 50 sculptures.

The sculpture has been carefully refinished while preserving its original form and texture. The body was updated with a light metallic silvery-gold acrylic finish, while the base was restored in glossy black. Both surfaces were then protected with a substantial clear lacquer top coat, and new felt was added to the base.

My goal with each restoration is to preserve the artistic integrity of the original piece while giving it a finish that allows it to live beautifully in a contemporary interior for many years to come.
